Last Amsterdam Post

While my memory is fresh: Places Worth Visiting in Amsterdam

Bars:

Brecht - little hipster bar off wateringscircuit that has special belgian beers and is decorated to resemble the German director Bertolt Brecht's living room.

Dwars - tiny hole-in-the-wall gay club off rembrantplein. Plays stellar dancing music, the bar tenders are awesome, but quite smokey.

De Duivel - hip hop club. Quite crowded often, plays good dancing music, good place to get groped/shot. Also you can meet awesome Ugandan men.

Viva La Vie - lesbian bar. Very chill in early evening, extremely crowded after midnight. Plays excellent music and shows music videos, has lots of hot lesbians, beer is kinda pricey.

De Trut - exclusive gay bar. no straight shenanigans allowed. beer for a euro (cheap!), quiet music, lots of cliques. very crowded, but fun if you know people.

Museums:

Ship museum - get to tour a real dutch merchant ship on the water, go on a virtual boat adventure, and explore extensive galleries of art, old navigation equipment, and model boats. very fun, well designed, interesting museum.

Van Gogh museum - the people working here are grouchy but the art is obviously beautiful. The collection is on 4 stories and organized in a cool way. The gift shop is chock full of beautiful gifts as well.

Tropen museum - awesome exhibitions! lots of amazing history from all over the world, especially the major cultures from which immigrants to Holland have come such as Suriname and Indonesia. Great displays, art, and interactive experiences. Currently there is an amazing (albeit morbid) exhibit called 'death matters'. They have cycling exhibits, but it all centers around culture. The people working here were some of the friendliest I've met.

NEMO - Awesome science museum. check out their sex education exhibit... very enlightening.

Not worth it: Sex museum (not informative, just bombards you with lots of pictures of people doing it), Torture museum and Madam Tussards (both total tourist traps and have nothing to do with Amsterdam), and Anne Frank House (it's not the real house any more, just recreations or photos of recreations. if you've read the diary you already know what's going to be here, and it's kind of a disappointment).

Word of mouth: places I've heard were good

Heineken experience
Botanical gardens
Rembrant house
Diamond tour
